Mossy Nolan

So we asked each band that was part of the awards to give us a few words on what music means to them, how they got together and any other words of wisdom they might have! Today is Mossy Nolan who will be playing at 9pm on Saturday.

Mossy Nolan

Music has been extremely important in my daily life since I can remember. My Dad Tommy Nolan was a fixture on the folk revival scene throughout the 1960’s and 70’s and would have played with Andy Irvine and Joe Dolan of Sweeney’s Men and other trad and folk artists of the time. I spent a lot of time at sessions when I was young so I think the music went in that way. Although I have a huge interest in folk music and traditional culture I am trying my best to steer away from playing traditional material in a performance setting. Colm McGowan and myself are trying to employ the influence of folk music in a more thematic way rather than directly so we can explore our own original ideas about making music.

We feel that the music we are making for the second album represents ourselves much more than the first album (which we are very proud of). When we first heard about Spirit of Folk we thought it seemed like a great stage to showcase these ideas and having been asked back to play the second year at the festival and now the awards is a great feeling.
